0022. Inside the Methodist chapel round 1930. Soprano and tenor sat on left of the pulpit, contralto and bass on right. The harmonium behind the pulpit was powered by being hand pumped. The chapel is lit by oil lamps. The highpoint of the services in the year was the chapel or Sunday School Anniversary. Each child was encouraged to take part in a solo or joint song or recitation. It was usual for a girl to have her new best dress in the year at the time of the Anniversary. After the service there was a tea on trestle tables on the lawn behind the chapel, or very crowded in the school room if it was wet. For the children of Chapel Sunday School this was free but a child coming from the Church had to pay sixpence. From the collection of R E and F M Banks (nee Fairbrother). |
