0788. Harby cross in 1791. From Nichols volume 2, plate XLII, page 212. The position of the church on the left suggests that the cross in the 1790s was standing about where it is now. The 1793 map (map1793) shows a building where the school now stands so that a line can be taken to include this building on the right, the building behind being part of Hall Farm, and the church on the left as shown here with Belvoir Castle in the background. The 1904 Ordnance Survey 6 inches to a mile map shows a cross positioned by the south-east corner of the church. Engraving 1643 shows what appears to be this cross but with the upper part missing at that point on the map. The cross was moved from its original position when the school was built in 1860, the accounts record "Old Cross moving - £6.7s.0d". It was then moved back again to be reused as a War Memorial in the 1920s (see 0128). |
