0858.  Daniel Coy made this pump for the well he sank in 1936 to supply drinking water at his home at what is now 5 Red Causeway, Harby. He dug the well, about twelve to fourteen feet deep and lined it with bricks, made the lead pump and did the woodwork. He built the bungalow in 1929 when he  got married and until he sank the well they had to fetch drinking water from a well in Watsons Lane. To get water for washing etc Dan built a large brick cistern under the yard to collect the rainwater from the roof. This was pumped with a semi rotary hand pump to a cistern in the roof from where it fed the hot and cold taps in the house. There was no bathroom but a full sized bath with hot and cold water supply was concealed under a large trap door in the kitchen floor. See 0829 and 0830 for pictures of the house.

The pump together with all the tinsmithing and some of the plumbing tools has been donated to the Melton Carnegie Museum. Trevor Coy collection.
