DEVIL'S TOENAILS AT HARBY
Have you ever seen any stones like this when you have been walking over the newly
ploughed fields around Harby. They are fossils of a type of oyster that lived in the sea 200 million years ago. Harby at that time was at the
bottom of the sea and the shells of these creatures fell to the seabed when they died and over the ages they turned into stone. 200 million years ago is called the Jurassic period by geologists and we know the name Jurassic because in geological strata from the land there are found the fossils of
dinosaurs.
These fossils are called Gryphaea (pronounced gry-fee-a) by geologists. In earlier times, before the science of geology had developed, people called them "devil's toenails"
