Harby is a large Vale of Belvoir village with a population of 873 people,
375 houses, nine miles north of Melton Mowbray.
Harby occupies an important central position in the Vale of Belvoir. It was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1085 as Herdebi
but the name goes back to Viking times and it means the village
of Hjortr.
Over the centuries many changes have taken place but Harby has always retained the pattern of its roads and dwellings and has continued to be at the hub of Vale life.
Today Harby is fortunate to have kept all the vital features which make for a thriving village life, unlike so many of our neighbouring villages. The historic church of St. Mary's dominates the approach to Harby from Langar. More centrally the Valley Christian
Center is housed in the old chapel. The heart of the village contains two characterful public houses, the vital garage and two excellent shops, one of which is also our much-needed Post Office. We can boast an attractive and successful primary school. Community activities are housed at the Village Hall. These facilities are crucial to the high quality of life we continue to enjoy in Harby. In addition some other places of work still can be found in the village, notably the two dairies. More work opportunities exist at the Langar industrial estate, close to the village.
