This is a section from the  1884 Ist edition 1:2,500 Ordnance Survey map Leicestershire sheet 7/9.

The pinfold is shown in Pinfold Lane, a circular enclosure where any  domestic animals found wandering the streets were pinned up for the owners to claim. The wells and pumps are shown by W and P, this was before the time of running water in each house. Most of the houses are detached and set in their own gardens. The Smithy is at the corner of School Lane and Langar Lane as we call them now, land plot 156. The sawpit is in Green Lane plot 202. The Rectory stands out for the size of the house and its surrounding gardens. By Langar Bridge is the Vale Brewery and a windmill. There is also a windmill at Colston Bridge and on the road to Hose, not shown on this section of the map. There are large areas of orchard in the centre of the village shown by the small trees such as on plots 128 and 129 (our Boyers Orchard) and 204. New opportunities for employment have just begun with the railway opening in 1879 and ironstone mining starting in 1882. The 1881 census records 11 people working on the railway and 1 on  mining in a population of 591.
