HARBY is a considerable village and parish in the division, union, and
County Court district of Melton, and rural deanery and hundred of
Framland. The village is on the western part of the Vale of Belvoir, on
the south side of the Grantham canal, and border of Notts, 8 3/4 miles
N. from Melton, 14 S.E. from Nottingham, and 24 from Leicester. St.
Mary's Church is a fine structure, dating from the Early Decorated
period. In 1874-6 the building was well restored, except the tower, at a
cost of £1,500 (the chancel at a cost of £500, defrayed by the Rector).
The living is a rectory of the nominal value of £569 a year (gross),
arising from 459a. of glebe awarded in lieu of tithes at the Enclosure
in 1793, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Rutland. The
registers date from 1700. There are Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1847, and
National School, erected in 1860. The parish has a fifth portion of the
Charity of William Chester, who in 1703 left 68a. of land, also the
interest of £40, left by the Duke of St. Albans, and of £10 and £20 left
by Mr. Major and Mr. Orson. The principal landowners are the Rector, the
Duke of Rutland, lord of the manor, and Messrs. F. Orson, J.Smith, J.
Whittle and H. T. Shipman. The area of the parish is 1,980a. 3r. 10p. ;
rateable value, £3,628 1s. {land, £2,093 13s. ; buildings, £1,534 8s.) ;
population in 1891, 636. The feast is on the Sunday after September
