HARBY is a large village and parish, in the northern division of the
county, hundred and rural deanery of Framland, Melton Union and County
Court district. The village is in the Vale of Belvoir, on the south side
of the Grantham canal, and border of Nottinghamshire, 8 3/4 miles N.
from Melton, and 14 miles S.E. from Nottingham. St. Mary's Church is a
fine structure in the perpendicular style, comprising chancel, nave,
aisles, south porch, battlemented tower and pinnacles, with four bells
and clock, which was
presented by the Duke and Duchess of St. Albans. n 1874-6 various
restorations and improvements were effected, at a total cost of £1500,
of which the Duke of Rutland contributed £200, Part of the foundations
were underpinned, the north aisle built, the other portions of the
church newly roofed, and fresh flooring laid down. The restoration of
the chancel involved a further charge of £400, which was defrayed by the
Rector. The organ cost £80. The register dates from 1700. The living is
a rectory valued at £469 a year (arising from 455 acres of glebe, which
were awarded in lieu of tithes at the enclosure in 1793), in the gift of
the Duke of Rutland. There is a Wesleyan Chapel, also a National School,
erected 1860. The proceeds of several charitable bequests are
distributed yearly by the rector and churchwardens. The principal
landowners are the ..Duke of Rutland, Lord of the Manor, Messrs. J.
Smith, J. Whittle, Shipman, and W. Lamin. The area is 2800 acres, the
rateable Value about £3090; population in 1871, 539. The church feast is
on the Sunday after September 19th. A station on the Great Northern
branch railway from Leicester to Newark, about half a mile distant,
serves for both Harby and Stathern.
