HARBY is a considerable village and parish in the division, union, and County Court district of Melton, and rural deanery and hundred of Framland. The village is on the western part of the Vale of Belvoir, on the south side of the Grantham canal, and border of Notts., 8| miles N. from Melton, 14 S.E. from Nottingham, and 24 from Leicester. St. Mary's Church is a fine structure, dating from the Early Decorated period, comprising chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, and south porch, embattled tower and pinnacles, with clock and five bells. In 1874-6 restorations were carried out at a cost of £1500. Part of the foundations were underpinned, the north aisle built, part of the church re-roofed, and fresh flooring laid down. The chancel was also restored at a cost of £400, defrayed by the Rector. The organ cost £80. In 1887 the fifth bell was added in commemoration of the Jubilee of Her Majesty's reign. The living is a Rectory of the nominal value of £569 a year (gross), arising from 455a. of glebe awarded in lieu of tithes at the Enclosure in 1793, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Rutland. The Registers date from 1700. There are Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1847, and National School, erected in 1860. The principal landowners are the Duke of Rutland, lord of the manor, and Messrs. F. Orson, J. Smith, J. Whittle, and H. T. Shipman. The area of the parish is 1980a. 3r. 10p. ; rateable value, £3740 15s.; population in 1891, 636. The feast is on the Sunday after September 19.
